Abstract

The present study performs a comparative analysis of the influence and effectiveness of primary support networks on the volitional components of elderly people institutionalized in public and private residences within the Metropolitan Region. Its objectives include identifying primary support networks, to describe the volitional processes, and to know the individual and subjective experiences of the participants. For this, a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design was used, evaluating the experiences of 8 participants, through an interview specifically designed for the study and the Volitional Questionnaire (VQ). The results reveal that primary support networks, composed mainly of direct relatives, are essential in the volitional process. In addition, 75% of the participants showed high volitional levels, predominating the stages of exploration and competition. In conclusion, the quality of networks and the environment are a determining factor in the volitional state of institutionalized older people.
